SB824-44178r.jpg

This specimen was lot 44178 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $5,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. War of Independence. Sombrerete de Vargas. 8 Reales, 1811. Ferdinand VII. NGC VF-30. Struck type. Variety with large "VARGAS". Rather well-executed for this invariably crude issue. Full legends are visible on the shield side, while the opposing side shows a clear date and bold "VARGAS' across the top. Uncleaned and spared from the aggressive adjustment marks commonly found, this RARE piece is seldom found so wholesome. From the S.P. Rutherford Collection." Sombrerete, in the state of Zacatecas, was in a rich mining area and had a local mint 1810-12 which struck half, one, two, four and eight reales, of which the eight reales are the best known. The town is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This type was struck 1811-12 along with KM 176 (small "VARGAS") for 1810-11.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-15848, KM-177; Cal-1426; Ramirez-S8.2.1.
