Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70239
SB1123-70239r.jpg

This specimen was lot 70239 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Chilpanzingo. War of Independence. Real, ND (1811-14). PCGS FINE-12. Congress of Chilpanzingo Type A countermark applied to a cast copy of an 1804 Mexico City Real of Charles IV. While its details are muddled with those of the crude host coin, the outer wreath of the insurgent countermark is clearly distinguishable. The host's peripheral legends, including its date and ruler's name, are all quite clear. Rather SCARCE on this low-denomination host, this is an interesting and quite individual example. Dusty gray tone adds to the rustic eye appeal." As the War of Independence ground on and the armies degenerated into gangs of bandits, coins were countermarked and counter-countermarked as a form of propaganda. This is the only Chilpanzingo countermark known on a one real.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-A257; cf. Pradeau-Pl. XXI, 7.
