Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70259
SB1123-70259r.jpg

This specimen was lot 70259 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Morelos/Chilpanzingo/LVS. War of Independence. 8 Reales, ND (1811-14). PCGS VF-25. Morelos Type A, Chilpanzingo Type A, and script "LVS" countermarks on a cast 1811-Mo HJ 8 Reales of Ferdinand VII. An uncommonly wholesome and attractive example of this SCARCE countermark combination. All three stamps appear bold and fresh on the obverse, and their order of placement (LVS-Morelos-Chilpanzingo) is easily ascertained. The cast host coin is of quality manufacture, offering fully realized legends on both sides and only limited flattening on the reverse opposite the countermarks. The mottled charcoal tone and lack of any kind of distracting damage elevate the coin's eye appeal far beyond what is typically offered." As the War of Independence ground on and the armies degenerated into gangs of bandits, coins were countermarked and counter-countermarked as a form of propaganda. This sale also offered a four reales with the same combination of countermarks.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-C286.
