Villagran 2 reales rev Ponterio 169-11183.jpg

This specimen was lot 11183 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $575. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. War of Independence VILLAGRAN. 2 Reales, ND. VILLAGRAN countermark on a cast silver 1802-MoFT 2 Reales (KM-91). Host coin of typical crude manufacture. Countermark weakly struck. Both host coin and countermark are FINE." This is one of many enigmatic cast and countermarked coins issued by various rebel and royalist generals during the Revolution. Officers knew their control over the hordes under their command extended only as far as their ability to pay them. Looted bullion would be transformed into spendable coin as fast as and by any means possible.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 grams, 0.896 fine silver, .195 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-298 (plate coin).
