This coin was minted in Lima, Peru, in 1812. This specimen was lot 3512 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $3,910. The catalog description[1] noted,

"1812 JP 8 escudos. Lima mint. AU-58 (NGC). Large draped and laureated bust of Fernando VII to right, legends around, date below/crowned arms, legends around. Pleasing orange gold with deeper toning in the recesses. Small area of granularity in the right obverse field, as made, minor hairlines, some softness of strike at crown caused by high relief of this one year bust type. This bust punch was intended for use on 8 reales and was never used on 8 escudos after 1812. Calico calls this variety rare. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."

This type was struck 1811-12 only. See also the eight escudos small bust.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarcer than the small bust type.
