Morton & Eden sale 104, lot 639

This specimen was lot 639 in Morton & Eden sale 104 (London, November 2019), where it sold for £1,800 (about US$2,788 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Decimal Coinage, 2½ pesos, Guanajuato mint, 1888 R, mintmark Go over Mo, good extremely fine and very rare [110 pieces struck]. NGC holder graded MS 62." The Mexico City mint issued a steady series of this denomination 1870-92 and there are a few available dates from Zacatecas but the other mints (Alamos, Culiacan, Durango, Guanajuato, Hermosillo) are all rare or uncollectible. This is one of two dates from Guanajuato, the other being 1871.

Recorded mintage: 110.

Specification: 4.23 g, 0.875 fine gold, .119 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 411.3.
