Mexico 1880-Do TB 8 reales

Morton & Eden sale 104, lot 434

This specimen was lot 434 in Morton & Eden sale 104 (London, November 2019), where it sold for £180 (about US$279 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted, "Republic, 8 reales, Durango mint, 1880 TB, second 8 of date over 7, extremely fine. Ex Zamroa, February 1951." The Durango mint produced large quantities of eight reales 1824-95, including a few of the "hook-neck" style. Many early dates are noted for their "French style" eagle so distinctive to that mint. By the 1880's, Durango mint eight reales looked pretty much like all the other mints and are common. For 1880, assayer JP is common and assayer TB is very scarce. No premium is awarded the overdate.
