Mexico 1880/79-Mo M 2 1/2 pesos

Heritage sale 3024, lot 25144

This specimen was lot 25144 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Republic gold 2 1/2 Pesos 1880/79 Mo-M, AU, soft honey-golden colored with gleaming fields. A well struck example of this extremely scarce overdate variety." This type was struck at Mexico City 1870-92. The type is also recorded from Culiacan, Durango, Guanajuato, Alamos, Hermosillo and Zacatecas but Mexico City is by far the most prolific issuer. The SCWC does not list a normal date for the year. The series, never popular, ended in 1893.
