Morton & Eden sale 104, lot 380

This specimen was lot 380 in Morton & Eden sale 104 (London, November 2019), where it sold for £350 (about US$542 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted, "Republic, 8 reales, Alamos mint, 1880 ML, 0 of date over misaligned 0, practically as struck and lightly toned. Probably from a small group of uncirculated coins discovered in the 1970s." The Alamos mint struck eight reales 1864-95, which represent the vast majority of its output during its life. Mintages were small compared to Guanajuato or Zacatecas but most dates, including this one, are not too hard to find. Choice examples, as always, bring a premium. Assayer ML is listed for 1879-95.

Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, 0.785 troy oz ASW.
