Mexico 1880-Pi MH 8 reales

Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70827

This specimen was lot 70827 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $720. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1880-Pi MH. San Luis Potosi Mint. NGC MS-63. VERY SCARCE in Uncirculated grades, this Select survivor displays a nice strike for the date with pale tone and soft surrounding luster contributing to the appearance. NGC has only certified three total in MS-63 grade with a mere two examples finer." Assayer MH stamped coins 1873-85 and MR stamped coins 1879-80 and 1886-93. The 1880-P^I MH is common while the 1880-P^I MR is very scarce, verging on rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.
