Mexico 1880-Cn JD 8 reales

Stack's Bowers September 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73183

This specimen was lot 73183 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $408. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1880-Cn JD. Culiacan Mint. NGC MS-64. A handsome example of the type with full luster and lovely cabinet toning." This date from the Culiacan mint is common along with an 1880/70 overdate. Assayer JD is known for 1878-82. The Culiacan mintmark, originally a plain "C", was changed to "C^N" in 1874. The mint was closed in 1905.
