Ponterio sale 155, lot 6216

This specimen was lot 6216 in Ponterio sale 155 (Baltimore, November 2010), where it sold for $1,955. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Chihuahua. 8 Reales, 1880-PM. VERY RARE. Dipped, nice strike, lustrous EXTREMELY FINE-ALMOST UNCIRCULATED." The Chihuahua mint struck eight reales 1831-95. Many of the early dates are rare but most of the later dates are fairly common. This specimen is rare by virtue of the brief tenure of mintmaster PM. Mintmasters AV (rare), PM (very rare), MG and MM are all recorded for 1880.
