Mexico 1881-C JD 8 reales

Stack's Bowers May 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70384

This specimen was lot 70384 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $432. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1881-C JD. Culiacan Mint. NGC MS-62. This nicely preserved example boasts a strong strike with bold devices. The fields display a light gray color with pale sunset hued patina and minor earthen deposits amongst the devices. Wholly original looking, this handsome piece offers a pleasing appearance." The Culiacan mint was opened in 1846 and struck all the silver and gold denominations. The early issues are scarce but become more common after 1855. Assayer JD is listed for 1878-82. For 1881, the SCWC reports 1881-C JD (shown here, common), 1881/0 overdate (slight premium) and 1881-C^N JD (scarce). The mint was closed in 1905 and was the last branch mint along with Zacatecas.

Recorded mintage: 1,032,000 (all varieties).
