Mexico 1881-Mo centavo

Ponterio sale 169, lot 11352

This specimen was lot 11352 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $489. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Mexico City. Centavo, 1881-Mo. NGC MS-64 RB. Lustrous with traces of original mint red. Sharply struck." This date is not rare but less common than the 1886-97 dates. The minting of large size copper centavos was suspended in 1882 in favor of a small copper-nickel issue. When the new type was rejected by the populace, the old type was resumed in 1886.

Recorded mintage: 1,060,000.

Specification: 8 g, copper, 25 mm diameter, reeded edge.
