Mexico 1881-Go SB 8 reales

This specimen was lot 24736 in Heritage sale 3016 (New York, January 2012), where it sold for $977.50. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Republic 8 Reales 1881/0 Go-SB, MS65 NGC. Full mint brilliance below gorgeous golden toning. The strike is full and the surfaces free of detracting marks. The 0 is clear below the second 1 of the date and this variety is much rarer than the normal date." We hasten to assure collectors contemplating this series that this date from the Guanajuato mint normally sells for a fraction of the price realized above. The Guanajuato mint issued this type 1825-97 and most dates after 1829 are readily available. An 1881/0 (shown here) and 1881/71 overdates are listed and given a slight premium.
