Mexico 1881-As L 50 centavos

from the Stack's Bowers sale of the Kirk Menczer Collection, lot 72202

This specimen was lot 72202 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $216. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 50 Centavos, 1881-As L. Alamos Mint. NGC VF-30. Only example graded by NGC. Scarce date. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Decimal Minors." The Alamos mint struck this silver fifty centavos 1875-81, 1884-85 and 1888 and is accounted a better mint. The mintmark varied between "A" and "A^S"; the latter is shown here.

Recorded mintage: 18,000, an uncommon date.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.903 fine silver, 30.5 mm diameter, reeded edge.
