Mexico 1869O 8 escudos rev Stacks 110-1299.jpg

This specimen was lot 1299 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $3,220. The catalog description[1] noted,

"MEXICO. Republic. 8 Escudos, 1869 O AE. Oaxaca. Hand inscribing law book with quill and Liberty Cap. Rv. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. A choice coin with mirror reflective fields, bright yellow gold surfaces and trouble free from handling or circulation. The strike is reasonably sharp with just slight softness on the breast and the hand. Excellent surfaces and a delight to behold. Rare in this state of preservation. Choice About Uncirculated."

The Oaxaca mint struck eight escudos 1858-69; most of the dates are available in well circulated condition but nice specimens are scarce, especially as the Oaxaca mint is notorious for poor strike.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .760 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 383.10, Fr-74.
