Mexico 1869-Zs YH 4 reales

from Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71522

This specimen was lot 71522 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $600. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 4 Reales, 1869-Zs YH. Zacatecas Mint. NGC AU-55. Pale violet and olive decorate the steel gray devices of this stately minor. Pools of brilliance are still retained, as handling is minimal and relegated to the high points. Sharply struck and well deserving of the Choice About Uncirculated grade." Shown is an 1869Zs-YH four reales, a late date of a type struck at the Zacatecas mint 1830-70. Assayer YH is recorded for 1868-74. Ten mints (Mexico City, Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Potosi, Oaxaca, Hermosillo, Real del Catorce, Guadalupe y Calvo, Guadalajara and Culiacan) struck this type of which Guanajuato is tied with Zacatecas as the commonest mint. This date is common but, like all four reales, rare in choice condition.
