Mexico 1869MoC peso rev DSLR.jpg

Shown is a balance scale peso, of a type struck 1869-1873. It was not a success in the export market, the destination for most of Mexico's silver, so the type was discontinued in 1873 in favor of the resumption of the "cap and ray" eight reales. The specimen shown displays a conspicuous die cud on the reverse near the end of the olive branch.

This issue from Mexico City is the scarcest date for that mint. The only other issue for 1869 is the rare 1869-Oa. Other mints include Culiacan (scarce), Oaxaca (scarce), Guanajuato (common), Chihuahua (scarce), Guadalajara (rare), Durango (scarce), Zacatecas (common) and Potosi (scarce).

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Catalog reference: KM 408.5.
