Heritage sale 3081, lot 32302
Mexico H3081-32302r.jpg

This specimen was lot 32302 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $18,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Mexico: Republic gold 8 Escudos 1869 A-DL MS61 Prooflike NGC, Alamos mint, Long-pg. 294 (Extremely Rare). One of just four examples of this date from the Alamos mint certified by either NGC or PCGS - an extremely rare piece boasting wonderful eye appeal. Dazzlingly reflective fields and sharp in the devices; bizarrely, the obverse book seems to be missing an entire page, presumably from some form of die blockage yet one which has left no surface trauma. The Prooflike gloss simply continues shining from the empty space. A captivating piece whose rarity will not let it escape the attention of Mexican 8 Escudo type collectors." Of the twelve mints which issued eight escudos, Alamos is the scarcest and most expensive after Estado de Mexico. Only six dates are known from the 1864-72 period.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.875 fine gold, .76 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-65, KM 383.
