Mexico 1870-A DL 8 escudos

This specimen was lot 1197 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $2,185. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Republic. 8 Escudos, 1870 A DL. Alamos. Hand inscribing law book with quill and Liberty Cap. Rv. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. Cleaned, weakly struck from worn and heavily lapped dies, small areas of tooling offset on each side near date. Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated. Richard A. Long in his reference work states that this date is 'extremely rare' but can be found with patience." Of the twelve mints which issued eight escudos, Alamos is the scarcest and most expensive after Estado de Mexico. Only six dates are known from the 1864-72 period.
