Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 42702

This specimen was lot 42702 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Peso, 1870-Mo C. Mexico City. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, Unc Details. KM-408.5. From the Helena Collection." Shown is a balance scale peso, of a type struck 1869-1873. It was not a success in the export market, the destination for most of Mexico's silver, so the type was discontinued in 1873 in favor of the resumption of the "cap and ray" eight reales. This issue from Mexico City is common. Other mints include Guadalajara (rare), Durango (scarce), Culiacan (common), Oaxaca (scarce), Chihuahua (common), Guanajuato (common), Zacatecas (common) and Potosi (scarce).

Recorded mintage: 5,115,000, a common date.
