Mexico 1870-Pi O 5 centavos

from the Stack's Bowers 2017 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72740

This specimen is a rare date of a series struck 1869-93 at the San Luis Potosí mint. This ten centavos piece replaced the silver half real struck since colonial times. Several transitional designs were issued 1863-70, including one by the Maximilian regime, before settling on this type. It, in turn, was replaced by a five centavos piece with a redesigned reverse in 1898, by which time the Potosi mint had been closed. This specimen was lot 72740 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Santa Ana, CA, May 2017), where it sold for $152.75. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 5 Centavos, 1870-PiO/MoC. NGC FINE-15. VERY RARE date. Over mintmark and assayer, with assayer 'O' at San Luis Potosí over assayer 'C' from Mexico City. An always in demand coin."
