Mexico 1870Ca 10 centavos rev DSL.jpg

This type was originally struck in San Luis Potosí in 1863, as Maximilian's troops advanced, and revived for use at Chihuahua 1868-70. Of the three dates, 1870 is the most available. It is much scarcer than the regular type, particularly if one is seeking a well struck specimen. The second specimen was lot 8909 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $1,150. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Chihuahua. 10 Centavos, 1870-Ca. Rare type in this high grade. Toned. NGC MS-63."

Recorded mintage: 17,000.

Specification: 2.707 g, 0.903 fine silver, .078 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 401.1.
