Stack's Bowers 2021 ANA sale, lot 45340

This specimen was lot 45340 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1870-Ca MM. Chihuahua Mint. PCGS MS-62. A decently struck Crown with shimmering, frosty luster and largely free of toning." This date is scarce but not rare. The Chihuahua mint operated during the War of Independence and struck eight reales 1810-22. It was closed for some years but resumed striking eight reales for the republic 1831-95. While predecimal minor coinage is very scanty, there is a run of eight escudos 1841-71.
