from the Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale, lot 21232

Shown is a balance scale peso, of a type struck 1869-1873. The first specimen was lot 6494 in Ponterio sale 155 (Baltimore, November 2010). The second specimen was lot 21232 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $4,320. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Peso, 1870-GaC. NGC AU-55. RARE and the finest of only 2 pieces certified at NGC; an additional 2 pieces have been certified at PCGS including one in MS62. A superior example of this difficult to locate date. Reasonably good strike, bright with soft satin luster. From the Alex Siegel Collection." It was not a success in the export market, the destination for most of Mexico's silver, so the type was discontinued in 1873 in favor of the resumption of the "cap and ray" eight reales. This issue from Guadalajara is rare. Other mints include Culiacan (scarce), Durango (scarce), Mexico City (common), Oaxaca (scarce), Chihuahua (common), Guanajuato (common), Zacatecas (common) and Potosi (scarce).

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
