This specimen was lot 40285 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $1,146. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 10 Pesos, 1870-OA E. NGC Unc Details--Surface Hairlines. From a mintage of only 4,614 pieces." This expensive type would be even rarer were it not that many examples were hoarded as Mexican silver became overvalued. Finally, in 1905, the Diaz regime devalued the silver peso 50% and issued a new series of gold coins half the weight of their predecessors. Mintage figures are not a reliable indicator of rarity for this type due to the accidents of hoarding; many low mintage issues are readily available while other high mintage issues are very rare. This date, however, is common for the type.
