Mexico 1869-Ga IC 8 reales

Stack's Bowers February 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73198

This specimen was lot 73198 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $120. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1869-Ga IC. Guadalajara Mint. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, EF Details. A RARE date for Guadalajara, this piece retains an enticing lustrous finish and full strike." Altho the Guadalajara mint was opened in the early days of the War of Independence, the early dates of the cap-and-ray eight reales are all rare. The first affordable date is 1832 and the first common date is 1859. Assayer IC operated 1869-77. The 1869-G^A JM is uncommon while the 1869-G^A IC is scarce. No eight reales were made at Guadalajara in 1871 or 1872, the mint striking balance scale pesos instead.
