Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 73016

This specimen was lot 73016 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $170.80. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 2 Reales, 1869-C CE. Culiacan Mint. NGC VF-30. Last year for this mint. Second highest of three graded by NGC. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Of the fourteen mints of the Republic of Mexico, only Oaxaca did not strike this type. The Culiacan mint struck two reales 1846-61 and 1869, all with assayer CE (Clemente Espinosa). This type, legal tender in the pre Civil War United States for a quarter, is common except in uncirculated. The 1861-MoCH is the only date of two reales that is reasonably common in high grade, the result of the dispersal of a hoard.
