This specimen was lot 43080 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE. Constitution. Brass 2 Sols, Year 3/1791-AA. Metz Mint. Louis XVI. PCGS MS-64. Margolis posits that this example is a specimen or essai striking on a large planchet with a perfectly plain, smooth edge. Brassy-yellow in hue, with a great strike and tremendous brilliance. VERY RARE as such. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Superior on 2 December 1990). Ex: Superior Galleries (12/1990) Lot # 1263. Ex: Palace Collections of Egypt [King Farouk] (Sotheby's - 3/1954) Lot # 2130 (part of)."

This coin was minted at Metz during the throes of the Revolution. 1793 was the year the king was tried and executed. Amid the chaos, large quantities of these copper two sols were issued, along with six and twelve deniers (half and one sols). This type was hurriedly and crudely made and is rarely found better than Very Good. The Metz product is the second most common after Paris.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 24.47 g, bronze or metal du cloche; this specimen 22.21 g.
