Jean Elsen sale 150, lot 1410

This specimen was lot 1410 in Jean Elsen sale 150 (Brussels, March 2022), where it sold for €150 (about US$199 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Constitution (1791-1792), Métal de cloche 2 sols, 1792A, an 4, Paris. Type FRANCOIS. D/ B. dr. à g. R/ Faisceau dans une couronne de chêne. Patine noire. Griffes au droit. Très Beau à Superbe. (France, constitutional period, 1791-92, "bell metal" two sols of 1792, year 4, Paris mint, Type FRANCOIS. Obverse: draped bust right; reverse: fasces in an oak wreath. Dark patina, scratches on the obverse, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This specimen is one of a type struck 1791-93 during the early stages of the French Revolution before the trial and execution of the king. Enormous quantities were produced at several temporary mints from any metal available. This and other base metal issues of the 1790's went into circulation and were not demonetized until the 1840's.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: 24.47 g, 32-35 mm diameter, plain edge, bronze or metal du cloche; this specimen 23,15 g.
