Stack's Bowers September 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71105
SB925-71105r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71105 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Constitution. Bronze 2 Sols, Year 4/1792-MA. Marseille Mint. Louis XVI. PCGS VF-20. Variety with "LA LE LOI ROI". Featuring an intriguing reverse legend variant in which the order of two words has been inverted, this error issue effectively reads as "the nation, the the, law king," as opposed to the intended "the nation, the law, the king." Evenly circulated, with lighter brown hues upon the higher points and darker areas among the fields. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Weil in 1982 for $75). Ex: Alain Weil (6/1982) Lot # 269." This coin was minted at Marseille during the throes of the Revolution. 1793 was the year the king was tried and executed. Amid the chaos, large quantities of these copper two sols were issued, along with six and twelve deniers (¼ and ½ sols). The 1791-93 issues bear the bust of the king but his ouster forced the removal of his portrait. This type was hurriedly and crudely made and is rarely found better than Very Good.

Recorded mintage: unknown, a better date.

Specification: 24.47 g, bronze or brass, 36 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-603.11; Gad-25.
