France 1792-W 12 deniers
The first specimen was lot 71071 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Constitution. 12 Deniers, Year 4/1792-Ẉ. Arras (Maison des Carmes) Mint. Louis XVI. EXTREMELY FINE Details -- Environmental Damage. Emanating from a more difficult-to-encounter provisional mint, this circulated specimen stands as a pleasing representative. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from B.A.N. in 1972 for $4.50). Ex: B.A.N. FPL 157 (10/1972) Lot # 4750." The W with the dot under it is the mark of the Arras mint, which was open May to August 1792 to strike sols and double sols. The weak strike, crude planchet and evidence of die clash are characteristic of this issue. Both Arras and Lille are better dates with Arras priced slightly higher. The second specimen was part of lot 71307 in the same sale, which sold for $292.80. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Constitution. Nonet of 12 Deniers (9 Pieces), Year 4/1792. Louis XVI. Grade Range: VERY GOOD to ABOUT UNCIRCULATED Details. 1) Perpignan, 11.79 g. Second semester. VERY FINE. Scratched, Environmental Damage. 2) Perpignan, FINE. Scratched. 3) Orleans, 12.67 g. VERY FINE. 4) Orleans, VERY GOOD. 5) Orleans, VERY GOOD. 6) Nantes, VERY FINE. 7) Saumur, 12.40 g. EXTREMELY FINE. Scratched, Environmental Damage. 8) Lille, VERY FINE. 9) Pau, 13.06 g. ABOUT UNCIRCULATED. Environmental Damage. SOLD AS IS/NO RETURNS. From the Richard Margolis Collection."
The provisional mints of the Revolution.[2] Responding to an acute coin shortage caused by the collapse of the assignats, the National Assembly late in 1791 authorized the establishment of temporary mints to supplement the output of base metal coinage by the regular mints. These provisional mints were to be close to existing mints and supervised by mint personnel. These requirements were ignored. The following mints are known to have produced three, six and twelve denier pieces and two sols: Convent des Barnabites (in Paris, but outside the Mint), mintmark "A" with a dot; Arras, mintmark "W" with a dot; Besançon, mintmark "BB"; Clermont-Ferrand, mintmark "I" with a dot; Dijon, mintmark "D" with a dot; Metz (adjacent to the regular mint), mintmark "AA" with a dot; Roanne, mintmark "D"; and Saumur, mintmark "T" with a dot. Most of these mints were closed by the end of 1792 tho some may have operated into 1793.
Recorded mintage: 733,320 plus 328,399 from the actual Lille mint.
Specification: 12.23 g, bronze or brass, 29 mm diameter. The second specimen is 11.32 g.
