France 1792BB 6 deniers rev DSLR.jpg

The first specimen was lot 1508 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Constitution (1791-1792), AE 6 deniers, 1792BB, an 4, Strasbourg. Type FRANCAIS. D/ B. dr. à g. R/ Faisceau dans une couronne de chêne. Rare. Très Beau. (France, Constitutional period, copper six deniers of 1792, year 4, Strasbourg mint, with FRANCAIS in legend. Obverse: draped bust left; reverse: fasces in an oak wreath. Rare, Very Fine.)"

In response to the economic emergency of 1792 (collapse of the assignats, foreign invasion, etc.), the revolutionary regime hurriedly ordered the production of three deniers, 6 deniers, 12 deniers and double sols from any available base metal. The six deniers shown here was not made in large numbers and is today a tough type in decent condition.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper or brass, 6.11 g, 26 mm diameter, plain edge, this specimen is 5,31 g.

Catalog reference: KM 611, Dupl-1724; Gad-7.
