Jean Elsen sale 146, lot 229

This specimen was lot 229 in Jean Elsen sale 146 (Brussels, November 2020), where it sold for €130 (about US$190 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Constitution (1791-1792), Cu 2 sols, 1792¨AA¨, an 4, Metz. Type FRANCOIS. D/ B. dr. à g. R/ Faisceau dans une couronne de chêne. Nettoyé. Très Beau à Superbe. (France, constitutional period, 1791-92, copper double sol of 1792, year 4, Metz mint, type FRANCOIS. Obverse: draped bust left; reverse: fasces in an oak wreath. Cleaned, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This specimen is one of a type struck 1791-93 during the early stages of the French Revolution before the trial and execution of the king. Enormous quantities were produced at several temporary mints from any metal available. This and other base metal issues of the 1790's went into circulation and were not demonetized until the 1840's. The Metz mint closed in 1800.

Specification: 24.47 g, 32-35 mm diameter, plain edge, bronze or metal du cloche; this specimen 22,97 g.
