Monneron Freres 1792 5 sols KM-Tn31
This specimen is a bronze five sols token issued for the merchants Monneron Freres in Paris, France, in 1792, the year of the Terror. These were made at the Soho Mint in Birmingham, England, whose steam presses were the only ones capable of striking such large copper coins. It is also believed that the Soho mint restruck these long after the Revolution was over for sale as souvenirs. This specimen has seen enough circulation that it is unlikely to be a restrike. The second specimen was lot 43143 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE. Constitution. Bronze 5 Sols Token, Year IV/1792. Birmingham (Soho) Mint. PCGS MS-64 Red Brown. Lettered (Départements) edge. By A. Dupré for the Monneron Brothers. Well struck and rather vibrant, this reb-brown near-Gem features a faint hint of the die recutting, in that the "IV" was engraved over a "III," with the middle and last numeral in the previous date evident near the top of the "V" on either side. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Ponterio on 21 March 1992) Lot # 1247. Ex: Ponterio & Associates (3/1992) Lot # 1247."
This token was also struck dated "L'AN III" (KM Tn30), which variety is rather scarcer.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: bronze. the second specimen is 31.19 g.
