Stephen Album sale 37, lot 1798

This specimen was lot 1798 in Stephen Album sale 37 (Santa Rosa, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $446.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE: First Republic, AR écu de 6 livres, 1792-M, Toulouse Mint issue, 2nd semester, wolf head privy mark, light obverse adjustment marks, EF." This specimen is a "constitutional écu" struck at the Montpellier mint, one of a type struck there 1792-93, prior to the trial and execution of the king. Its divisions were the ½, 1/4 and 1/8 écu, struck in billon. The écu was worth $1.10 in the USA before the Civil War. The 1792-A and 1793-A are the most available dates of this scarce type. Two privy marks are noted for this date: a coronet and a wolf's head (shown here).

Recorded mintage: unknown but a common date.

Specification: 29.48 g, 0.917 fine silver, 39 mm diameter, lettered edge.
