SB626-71066r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71066 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $89. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Constitution. 12 Deniers, Year 3/1791-Q. Perpignan Mint. Louis XVI. FINE. Second semester. A fairly SCARCE type, this worn specimen, according to Margolis, is "...the first example attained in nearly 50 years of collecting." From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Poinsignon in 2000 for $39.50). Ex: Poinsignon FPL 45 (June 2000) Lot # 4986." This specimen is one of a type struck 1791-93 during the early stages of the French Revolution before the trial and execution of the king. Enormous quantities were produced at several temporary mints from any metal available. This is a better date but Gadoury does not price it as rare. The copper version is priced slightly higher than the brass version.

Recorded mintage: 100,729.

Specification: 12.23 g, bronze or brass, 29 mm diameter, this specimen 12.47 g.

Catalog reference: KM-600.13; Gad-15.
