Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1505

This specimen was lot 1505 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €180 (about US$239 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Constitution (1791-1792), AR 15 sols, 1791AA, an 3, Metz. Type FRANCAIS. D/ T. nue à g., les cheveux noués par un ruban. R/ Génie inscrivant la constitution sur une table. Rare Deuxième semestre. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Constitutional period, silver fifteen sols of 1791, year 3, Metz mint, FRANCAIS in legend. Obverse: bare head to left, hair tied in a ribbon; reverse: the Genius of France inscribes the Constitution. Rare, second semester, Very Fine.)"

This specimen is a billon fifteen sols struck at the Metz mint in 1791. It is not common. Its face value was one-eighth of an écu. The type was struck 1791-93 and is known from Paris, Limoges, Bordeaux, Bayonne, Marseilles, Nantes and other mints.

Recorded mintage: 206,022, a better date.

Specification: 4.99 g, 0.666 fine silver, this specimen is 5,01 g.
