Stack's Bowers September 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71008

This specimen was lot 71008 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Kingdom. Louis d'Or, 1791-T. Nantes Mint. Louis XVI. PCGS Genuine--Ex Jewelry, VF Details. Second semester. Though this example has seen some circulation and was formerly in jewelry, it nevertheless stands as a VERY RARE and seldom encountered date. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Dorar Corporation [Terry Kaplan] on 16 February 1994 for $275)." A rare issue from the Nantes mint, which struck large numbers of this louis in 1786-88 as old French gold was recoined.

Recorded mintage: 3,853, a rare date.

Specification: 7.65 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, designed by Benjamin Duvivier.
