Jean Elsen sale 147, lot 1619

This specimen was lot 1619 in Jean Elsen sale 147 (Brussels, June 2021), where it sold for €100 (about US$146 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Constitution (1791-1792), AR 15 sols, 1791H, an 3, La Rochelle. Type FRANCOIS. D/ T. nue à g., les cheveux noués par un ruban. R/ Génie inscrivant la constitution sur une table. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, constitutional monarchy, silver fifteen sols of 1791, year 3, La Rochelle mint. Obverse: bare head left, hair tied in a ribbon; reverse: the Genius of France inscribes the constitution on a pedestal. Very Fine.)"

This specimen is a billon fifteen sols struck at the La Rochelle mint in 1791. It is somewhat scarce. Its face value was one-eighth of an écu. The type was struck 1791-93 and is known from Paris, Metz, Limoges, Bordeaux, Bayonne, Marseilles, Nantes and other mints.

Recorded mintage: 83,648, a somewhat better date.
