This specimen was lot 10226 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $764. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE. 12 Deniers, 1791-A. NGC MS-64. Louis XVI (1774-93). Struck in bell metal. 'FRANCOIS'. Lustrous and very attractive. From the Demarete Collection." This specimen is one of a type struck 1791-93 during the early stages of the French Revolution before the trial and execution of the king. Enormous quantities were produced at several temporary mints (the "A" mintmark here represents the Couvent des Barnabites in Paris, not the regular mint there) from any metal available. Some dates and varieties are rare but this one is common tho nice specimens are scarce.

Specification: brass, bronze or copper, 12.23 g, 29 mm diameter. Engraved by Benjamin Duvivier.
