Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 42691
SB0123-42691r.jpg

The second specimen was lot 42691 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/2 Real, 1851-Z OM. Zacatecas Mint. NGC MS-65." The Zacatecas mint struck this denomination 1826-63 and 1869. Most dates are common as Zacatecas and Guanajuato were the two mints which seriously attempted to produce minor coinage as well as the eight reales minted for export. Most issues of this mint show the "ZS" mintmark but this one uses a simple "Z". Assayer OM is listed for 1831-56. Confusingly, the photo in the SCWC depicts a gold one escudo.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.903 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-370.11.
