Stack's Bowers 2022 ANA sale, lot 31107
SB822-31107r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31107 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $2,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Escudos, 1851-Ga JG. Guadalajara Mint. PCGS Genuine--Altered Surfaces, AU Details. It is not entirely clear what is meant by the "altered surfaces" designation, but this example does exhibit a number of scattered marks on and around the book on the obverse. Meanwhile, there is little in the way of actual handling, and overall there is an alluring golden-cherry tone that takes hold near the legends. From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection." The specimen shown is one of a series struck intermittently 1825-66 at the Guadalajara mint. That mint struck all the silver and gold denominations used during the republic, from the ¼ real to the 8 escudos. Many are rare, tho this date obtains no premium in the SCWC.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .760 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-70; KM-383.5.
