Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72163

This specimen was lot 72163 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $576. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/2 Real, 1851/0-Ga JG. Guadalajara Mint. PCGS MS-64. A SCARCE overdate, especially in this near-Gem state. The fields glow with full mint luster around the crisp devices. A touch of light steely gray toning graces the surfaces of both sides." This specimen was struck at the Guadalajara mint in 1851, one of a type struck there 1825-62. According to the SCWC, this date only comes with the overdate and it is awarded no premium.
