Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 53163

This specimen was lot 53163 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $6,600. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Escudo, 1851-Ga JG. Guadalajara Mint. NGC AU Details--Plugged, Reverse Damage. Standing as what must undoubtedly be a VERY RARE and virtually never encountered date, this specimen does exhibit some issues in the form of a filled hole and scratch on the reverse, but for the advanced collector, it is clear that an opportunity like this likely won't present itself again anytime soon. From the Collection of Jacques Benuzillo (1899-1964)." The SCWC lists this mint for 1825-26, 1831, 1834-35, 1842-43, 1847-50, 1852, 1856-57, 1859-60. Many dates are rarer than the catalog indicates but there aren't enough one escudos around to tempt many collectors to obtain all the dates.
