Mexico 1851-Pi MC 4 reales

Stack's Bowers February 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73364

This specimen was lot 73364 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $312. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 4 Reales, 1851-Pi MC. San Luis Potosi Mint. PCGS EF-45. Nicely struck and problem-free, this 4 Reales piece offers great clarity amid its rich cabinet tone." San Luis Potosi, like most of the mints, concentrated on striking pesos for export but managed to produce an extensive run of four reales 1837-38, 1842-64, 1868-69. This is among the more available dates. Assayer MC operated 1849-60.
