SB223-72159r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72159 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 4 Reales, 1854-Pi MC. San Luis Potosí Mint. PCGS AU-55. The finest out of just five examples certified at either PCGS or NGC, this 4 Reales piece is certainly RARE in this condition. The surfaces are dramatically toned with mottled hues of dusty taupe and occasional flashes of amber that shine around the lustrous peripheries. Some central weakness on the reverse is the only drawback to note. A wholesome example for collectors of this challenging series." The Potosi mint struck four reales 1837-38, 1842-64 and 1868-69. Many dates are common but this is listed as a scarce date.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.903 fine silver, .392 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-375.8.
