This specimen was lot 73204 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $204. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1854-Pi MC. San Luis Potosí Mint. NGC AU Details--Cleaned. Medal alignment. Some light cleaning is noted, but this example has started to re-tone quite pleasingly. An important date within the series." The specimen shown is an 1854Pi-MC eight reales from the San Luis Potosí mint, which struck the type 1827-93. This date is one of several scarce dates (1849-60) issued during the War of the Reform. The earlier issues of 1831-48 and later issues of 1861-93 are more available. The San Luis Potosí mint closed in 1895, having struck most of the silver and copper denominations but never issued gold. The SCWC lists no overdates or varieties for the year.
