Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70894

This specimen was lot 70894 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1854-Zs OM. Zacatecas Mint. NGC MS-62. Tied for finest certified of the date with two other examples on the NGC population report, none finer. Nicely preserved and very attractive, this handsome example exhibits a strong strike displaying light gray patina with much remaining luster." The Zacatecas mint is tied with Guanajuato as the most prolific mint during the Republic and most of the eight reales struck 1825-97 are common, as is this one. Assayer OM operated 1831-55, one of the longest tenures of the Republic. An 1854/3 overdate is noted in the SCWC.
